Biography |
Born in 1978 in Ibiza, Spain, Nuria Garcia Masip grew up between Spain and the U.S.A. In 1999, after completing her B.A. in French and Spanish Literature at The George Washington University, U.S.A., she traveled to Morocco where she developed an interest in Islamic Art.
In 2000, she returned to Washington D.C. where she started studying the rik'a , sülüs , and nesih scripts with calligrapher ( hattat ) Mohamed Zakariya.
In 2004, she moved to Istanbul where she continued to study the sülüs and nesih scripts with the master of Mohamed Zakariya, hattat Hasan Çelebi, and with hattat Davut Bektas. In 2007, she received her diploma ( icazet ) in these two scripts, signed by her three teachers, under the auspices of IRCICA (Research Center for Islamic History, Art and Culture).
After living in Munich, Germany, for four years, Nuria is currently living in Ibiza, Spain, where she produces her own calligraphic works. She participates actively in calligraphy international exhibits and has organized workshops and conferences on this art. She visits Istanbul regularly where she continues to further her calligraphy studies under the guidance of her teachers.
